This self-guided itinerary combines world-class archaeological sites with the refreshing beauty of the Greek countryside.

The Royal Capitals of Macedon

Your journey can begin at Vergina (Ancient Aigai), the first Macedonian capital. Built in the 7th century BC, it served as the kingdom’s political and religious heart. At the Museum of the Royal Tombs, you can witness the extraordinary discoveries of 1977, including the tomb of Philip II, father of Alexander the Great, and the invaluable golden burial offerings found within.

Further along the route lies Pella, the second capital of antiquity and Alexander’s birthplace. The geographical location of ancient Dion is located at the eastern foot of Mount Olympus, where the town of the same name is located today, 83 km from Thessaloniki. The first written reference to Dion is in Thucydides, who mentions it as the first city through which the Spartan general Brasidas passed in 424 BC. In the years of Alexander the Great, Dion had an important position for Macedonia but also for Greece in general. From there, the general began his campaign for Asia. At the beginning of the 19th century. the ruins of Dion had been lost in the dense vegetation and waters. In 1806, the English traveler William Leake stopped at Dion and was the first to identify with certainty the location of ancient Dion. The ruins of the city are located approximately 4 kilometers from the sea. Archaeological research in the area began in 1928. The archaeological excavations brought to light the Sanctuary of Isis and other Egyptian gods, the small temple of the Hypolympic Aphrodite, the ancient Sanctuary of Demeter, a Hellenistic theater from the era of Philip V, a Roman theater from the 2nd century, a stadium, the villa of the god Dionysus with its magnificent mosaics, a cemetery, shops, stone columns (in the temple of Zeus), an odeon, walls, musical instruments (such as the hydraulis, a wind musical instrument) and baths. An archaeological museum has been operating in Dion since 1983, and all the finds from Dion and the rest of Pieria are exhibited there.

     </details>
      <details id="e-n-accordion-item-3571" class="e-n-accordion-item" >

Olympus

Olympus is the highest mountain in Greece and famous throughout the world, as at its peak (Mytikas-2,918 m.), the ancient Greeks had placed the residence of their Twelve “Olympic” Gods. Its solid mountain mass dominates the borders of Macedonia and Thessaly, with a series of high peaks that groove deep ravines, around which extends an area of particular biodiversity. Since 1938, Olympus is the first area in Greece to be designated a National Park. In 1981, UNESCO declared it a “Biosphere Reserve” and the E.U. included it in the important areas for bird fauna. The mountain range of Olympus is located approximately in the middle of mainland Greece and is easily accessible from the national road and railway network of Athens – Thessaloniki, and from provincial roads that connect the towns and villages around the mountain. Within the park there are some roads and several paths that give the visitor the opportunity to experience the diversity of the vegetation and the landscape up close. For experienced climbers there are also routes with climbs on the steep slopes. In many places there are seating areas near springs and fountains that offer moments of relaxation to visitors. The Forest Service (Directorate of Pieria Forests) has placed information signs at various points with the map of the National Park and useful instructions.

     </details>

Route 5: Volvi - Koroneia

.05

       <div class="e-n-accordion" aria-label="Accordion. The lake area is defined by the city of Lagadas at the western end and by the Rentina Straits, also known as the Macedonian Tempi, at the eastern end. In the middle of this area are the two lakes and around them the mountain ranges of Volvi, Vertiskos, Kerdyllia, Chortiatis, Holomontas and Stratonikos. Between the two lakes there is a narrow strip of land which has been constantly growing over time and they are connected to each other by a moat, while Volvi is connected to the Strymonikos Gulf through the Rihios River. The fertile lake area has been a motivation and factor in the development of organized social life since prehistoric times. A series of settlements from the Neolithic, Bronze and Iron Ages have been discovered around the lakes. In historical times, the development of the routes for the movement of people and goods, which passed through the area, connecting Thessaloniki with Eastern Macedonia and Thrace through the Rentina Straits, led to the development of important settlements, such as Apollonia. The Roman Egnatia road roughly followed the layout of the current national road and one of its stops still survives in N. Apollonia. Apollonia was an important commercial center of antiquity and a mandatory stop for travelers and caravans. The flora and fauna of the area are rich. The wetland of the lakes consists mainly of floating plants (floating on the surface of the water), benthic plants (rooted on the bottom), reeds and rushes. Plane trees, willows, poplars, alders, poplars and climbing plants grow around the lakes. The lakes, and especially Volvi, were once rich fish habitats. Today, fish have completely disappeared from Koroneia, while Volvi manages to maintain satisfactory, although constantly decreasing, populations. The wetland of the lakes is protected by a series of international treaties and regulatory acts that determine the development and management regime of the area.

     </details>
      <details id="e-n-accordion-item-1151" class="e-n-accordion-item" >

Lagada Termal Baths

The Lagkada baths are located 19 km northeast of Thessaloniki, next to the city of Lagkada, very close to the homonymous lake and have been operating as an organized thermal spring since ancient times. In their current form, the Castles of Thessaloniki are mainly the work of Byzantine emperors and the view of the city and the entire Thermaic Gulf from the Upper Town area, which they dominate, is magical. An eternal symbol of Thessaloniki, the White Tower stands proud and imposing, constituting one of the most important monuments of the city. Inside it operates a Museum with interesting exhibits. The Byzantine churches of Thessaloniki are of great interest, a valuable religious and cultural heritage.
